Is today’s world a better place to live?

Good Morning all. I am Mahitha and I am going to talk about “Is today’s world a better place to live?”

Today’s Newspaper is filled with lots of NEWS about Global warming, Pollution, Reduction of Agricultural Land, New diseases and Terrorism. Is the world so worse? No. Not at all.

Let’s start by analyzing how today’s younger generation is helping the world on 5 different parameters– 1) Agriculture and Food production 2) Healthcare 3) Education 4) Freedom 5) Conservation of Nature and Ecosystem on Earth.

Let’s start with Agriculture and Food production.
1.     Agriculture is the backbone of the world. We all know the necessity of water for food production. Kiara Nirghin, young girl, aged 16, has discovered a natural polymer to maintain the level of moisture in the soil. She is working to produce it at low cost, so that all the countries can use it during dry seasons.

2.     Next comes Healthcare. Using Medicine, Scientists and Doctors have always helped us to control life-threatening diseases like cholera and treatment of new virus like H1N1.  Jack Andraka, young boy, aged 16, has discovered an inexpensive way to detect pancreatic cancer.

3.     Thirdly, let’s talk about Education. In Today’s world, the Internet helps the underprivileged students to educate themselves. For example, Kelvin Doe, teenager, is a self-taught engineer from Africa. He has made batteries and generators from scrap metals to generate electricity at home and help his neighbours.

4.     Fourth is Freedom. In the digital era, women use social media to fight for freedom. As we all know, Malala Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel prize winner of the world. She started her journey as a blogger. She fights for the women’s and children’s rights.

5.     Finally, Conservation of Nature and Ecosystem. Our Nature and ecosystem is made of living organisms like plants, animals and nonliving components such as air, water, and land. There are lots of people working on the conservation of all these living and non-living components.  Wangari Maathai is a Nobel prize-winner, who has planted more than billion trees. Madhav Subramanian, a 12-year-old boy collects and donates money for tiger conservation. Monica Howe inspires people to use cycle and to reduce air pollution and global warming. Dr. Rajendra Singh has brought water to more than 1,000 villages and five rivers in Rajasthan by digging ponds and lakes.

So, let us never doubt these thoughtful and committed citizens. Also, let us not blame someone for the problems around us and create hopelessness. We Ryanites, should protect nature and ecosystem by not wasting food, switching off lights, closing taps properly, sharing books and toys and avoiding plastics. So, I proudly conclude that Today’s world is truly better than ever.
Thank you.
